Don't Depend On Me - Single

by Friday Life

1.
I see the way you look at me, And I know that I can only break your heart. I don't want to be the center of Your fragile galaxy, So it seems I must depart. I'm not your sun, I'm not your light nor your warmth, And I'm not the star that's gonna guide you North. Don't depend on me. Don't depend on me. I'm not your savior, not your Holy Ghost, And I'm not your lighthouse on the coast. Don't depend on me. Don't depend on me. You want me to be your everything, But I'm not even everything to myself. Maybe I'm too irresponsible, Or maybe too immature, And I don't know how to ask for help. Background vocals at end: I'll let you down (x8)

about

The brand new single from Friday Life! Although we wrote a lot of songs during quarantine, this song actually came into being during Jack Downey's sophomore year at Providence College. After coming up with the chorus, he paired the lyrics with a riff he had come up with over the summer. When he returned home for winter break, he brought the idea to the rest of the band and the song bloomed rather quickly. The band then went into the studio in January, 2021 to record the song before returning to school. Over the next few months, Jack worked with his music tech professor, Dr. Bill Longo, to mix the song. The process was slow, but in the end, it was worthwhile.

The lyrics to this song are some of the most emotional and poetic in the Friday Life catalogue, detailing a relationship that is not built to last. The protagonist realizes that he is incapable of truly being there for his lover. He recognizes his own shortcomings and comes to the conclusion that he must break it off to prevent further heartbreak later on. Better to break it off than to watch it rot and decay at his own hands. Interestingly, the lyrics come from an actual relationship that Jack was in at PC.

Overall, this is possibly the richest and best crafted song Friday Life has made to date. However, it is far from the peak, as the band prepares to begin work on their sophomore album, which takes the band into a brand new direction.
